MoneyApproach Shots is all about sending the ball to the target from the fairway, rough, or fairway bunker, to get on the green to make the finishing putt.
I don’t know about you, but when I see the tour pro make that approach shot to the green to stick it close, I say “Now That’s Money”! If they make the shot everyone applauds and cheers. If they don’t get into their scoring range, everyone provides a nice quiet golf clap or none at all. From down thew fairway, where the shot was taken, that’s the best indicator of how well the shot turned out. So, the Money Approach shot requires:
Course Mgmt – Read targets from afar for Green, Yellow & Red light zones. Then get the right tool with the right shot to hit the best target for your skills!
Course Conditions – Best estimate of what the ball flight will do in the wind & cold. Learn how to adjust to be able to play within yourself & hit the target!
Lie Conditions – Figure how the ball will come out of divots, side hills, rough. Slight setup changes make all the difference in the world.
Shot Mgmt – Decide what shot you have and what shot you need, here & now. There’s time to play it safe & there are times to go for it. Do you know when?
Money Approach shots and short putts have the most pressure. If you’ve ever been told to take your medicine and just punch out, Don’t Take that advice! That’s coming from the Other golfer’s skills and ability!
“Play Your Game!” as Herb Brooks repeatedly told the USA Hockey team to upset the 1960 Russians. Only you can decide what shot you have Today and how well you can pull it off. Remember that old adage in golf ”Chose Conservatively and play Aggressively”? It’s all about choosing a conservative club, usually one more that the distance calls for, and playing the full swing, full tempo shot to get it there.
Don’t hold nothing back! Even if the situation calls for a three quarter or half shot, be aggressive with a full tempo swing. Too many times, we think that a short shot to the green means a short club and a smaller tempo, and That’s where we get it wrong. Be fully committed to each and every shot!
If you learn nothing else, remember that Golf is a game of Opposites. We hit down on the ball to make it get up. We take a round swing with a round ball, to make it go straight. And especially with the approach shot, we Swing Within Ourselves to hit the target better! So learn from other’s experiences and try that for yourself.

You nailed it right on the head! I think you’re the gestaert golf instructor! Great job! This instructor really knows what he is talking about. I think about 90% of beginners do this. And it prevents a full shoulder turn. If you just keep your weight in the back foot, as you turn, you’ll automatically end up on your front foot. Thank you so much for your great video instructions!
